The massive high-definition screens surrounding the ballroom—usually reserved for family slideshows and corporate presentations—suddenly flickered to life.
Instead of welcoming photos, the monitors began playing clear audio and video feeds recorded over the past forty-eight hours.
Vanessa’s voice echoed through the ballroom speakers, crisp and damning: “Once the transfer goes through tomorrow, we liquidate his private accounts and put him in a facility upstate. He won’t even know what hit him.”
The room fell into dead silence. The champagne glasses stopped clinking.
Vanessa’s face drained of every ounce of color. She whirled around to stare at the screens, then back at me. “What… what is this? Ethan, turn that off!”
Uncle Martin staggered back, his eyes wide with panic as his own voice played next, detailing how they had planned to alter my corporate power of attorney documents while I was still “recovering.”
“You thought I was trapped in this chair,” I said softly, my voice carrying across the silent hall.
