Part 3: How to Spot the Difference

• Location: Cold sores appear outside the mouth on the lips, border, or chin; canker sores occur inside on inner lips, cheeks, or gums.
• Initial Sensation: Cold sores begin with a distinct tingling, itching, or burning sensation 1–2 days before a fluid-filled blister breaks out.
• Appearance: Cold sores form fluid-filled blisters that burst, ooze, and crust over into a scab; canker sores are round, flat white/yellow ulcers with a red border.
• Contagiousness: Cold sores are highly contagious via contact; canker sores are non-contagious and caused by stress, minor injury, or dietary triggers.
