Part 2: Cold Sores vs. Canker Sores

The most critical step in treating a lip sore is identifying whether it is a cold sore or a canker sore. While many people confuse the two, they are completely different conditions with distinct causes and locations.

Cold sores form on the outside of the mouth—on the lips or surrounding skin—and are caused by a contagious viral infection. Canker sores, on the other hand, develop exclusively inside the mouth on soft tissues and are entirely non-contagious.
