THE PRICE OF GREED

At twenty-nine, I had never kept a job longer than a month.

“Why waste my life behind a desk?” I told Mom. “I’m pretty enough to marry someone successful.”

So I knew I would eventually meet someone like Walter. He was dining alone at an elegant restaurant, and I immediately noticed his expensive gold watch and brand-new suit. So what if he was older than my grandfather?

When his hand trembled and he spilled his wine, I rushed over to help.

Weeks later, he sent me roses and a gold ring with a large diamond.

My parents begged me to slow down. “He’s nearly eighty,” Dad said. “Do you love him?”

“He treats me well. Isn’t that enough?”

Honestly, all I could think about was his luxurious mansion. It was being renovated at the time, but Walter said I would live there after our wedding.

But the closer we got to the wedding, the stranger things became.

Walter’s Bentley was also “being repaired.” He borrowed money from me to buy his wedding suit because his accounts were supposedly frozen.

“I’m preparing a big surprise for you, baby, so I just need a little more time,” he kept saying.

I didn’t care about surprises. I only wanted his money, so I was willing to be patient.

Our wedding was beautiful. During the vows, Walter stood and reached for the microphone.

“My bride doesn’t know ONE IMPORTANT DETAIL about me,” he announced. The guests turned toward me.

“Actually, I’ve been testing her this whole time to see whether she truly loves me,” he added, smiling.

I tightened my grip on the bouquet. WHAT?

“Because the truth is… when it comes to my FORTUNE…” I froze, waiting for his next words.
