THE WEDDING DESTROYED

PART 2: THE MORNING CALL

The caller was Arthur Pendelton, the senior managing partner of Pendelton & Associates—the prestigious international law firm where my mother had been desperately trying to secure a late-career consultancy position.

My mother adjusted her voice into her best professional tone, assuming Arthur was calling to offer congratulations or discuss her final interview scheduled for the following afternoon.

Instead, Arthur’s voice was sharp, rigid, and completely lacking his usual polite demeanor.

“Helen, I am calling to inform you that your application with our firm has been formally withdrawn and canceled,” he stated without preamble.

Mark Pendelton was the lead venture partner at the firm’s primary tech investment division—and he was the man sitting beside me at table twelve.

“Mark informed me of the speech you and your family delivered in front of two hundred guests,” Arthur continued, his voice dripping with absolute disdain.

“You referred to your elder daughter as a complete failure who ruined your life.”

Helen tried to laugh it off nervously, her voice trembling. “Arthur, that was just lighthearted family banter, a private joke taken out of context—”

“Maya is the Chief Technology Officer and primary architect of the enterprise software platform our firm just acquired for forty million dollars,” Arthur interrupted forcefully.

“She is not a failure, Helen. She is our lead partner, and your family’s gross incompetence is officially a liability to our organization.”
