“Michael, stop the car. Right now.” Ashley’s voice cut through the quiet interior of the luxury SUV. Without thinking, Michael hit the brakes, and the vehicle lurched to a stop on the side of the road.
“What is it?” he asked. Ashley pointed toward the sidewalk. “Look closely,” she said with a smug grin. “Doesn’t that look like your ex-wife?”
Michael turned and instantly felt his stomach drop. Standing beneath the scorching afternoon sun was Emily, but she looked nothing like the woman he remembered.
Gone was the polished wife who once accompanied him to charity galas, business dinners, and high-profile events. The woman standing there now wore tattered sandals, faded jeans, and a loose shirt covered in dust. Her hair was pulled back carelessly, and exhaustion seemed etched into every line of her face.
Yet none of that was what shook Michael. Emily was carrying two babies—twins, tiny infants wrapped carefully in blankets and held tightly against her chest. Even from a distance, he noticed something disturbing: the babies had his pale blond hair.
Bank records had appeared showing questionable transfers months prior. Later that afternoon, after dropping Ashley off at a luxury boutique, Michael drove straight to his office instead of going home. He locked the door, closed the blinds, and called the one person he trusted.
“David,” he said. “I need you to investigate everything. Where Emily’s been. How she survived. And those babies.”
There was a long pause on the other end. “Are you sure you want those answers?” David asked gently.
Michael stared out at the city skyline. “I should have asked those questions a year ago.”
Several hours later, David called back, his voice sounding unusually tense. “You need to see what I found. Eleven months ago, a pregnant woman checked into a county hospital and listed you as her emergency contact.”
Michael froze. “Emily?”
“Yes,” David replied. “She left your office number. Your home number. Every way possible to reach you. And then someone paid to have those records erased.”
For the first time since the divorce, Michael wasn’t angry—he was terrified. Because if Emily had tried to contact him while carrying his children, then the betrayal he believed had destroyed his marriage may have started much closer to home.
Moments later, David emailed him the recovered paperwork. Michael opened the file, his hand trembling as he stared at the screen. The authorization form contained a single signature—and the instant he read it, his blood turned completely cold.
