PART 3: THE DEED AND THE DEBT

I stepped forward, putting my arm gently around my wife’s shoulders while pulling the thick leather folder from inside my jacket.

“You thought you bought out the entire district for your new luxury high-rises, Victor,” I said quietly, my voice echoing across the silent hall. “You thought the old environmental records were erased when the city archives were updated.”

I pulled out a yellowed deed stamped with the state seal, along with a certified land trust document bearing my wife’s maiden name.

Ruth hadn’t just survived that tragic night; the town had collectively deeded the central historic district to her family as a lifelong protective trust to prevent any future commercial development.

Ethan stood frozen, staring back and forth between the ruined dress, his mother’s scar, and his future father-in-law’s terrified expression.

“You… you own the land core?” Madison gasped, realization finally dawning on her as she looked at her father’s drained face.

“Without her signature, your forty-million-dollar project is an illegal trespass,” I stated firmly, laying the documents on the table beside Victor’s spilled wine.
