PART 2: THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

Victor Langford’s hand trembled so violently that wine spilled over the rim of his crystal glass, staining his pristine white cuff.

The hush in the ballroom deepened as he took three unsteady steps toward Ruth, ignoring his daughter’s confused, mocking expression.

“Where did you get that mark?” Victor choked out, his voice stripped of all his usual corporate authority.

Madison scoffed, crossing her arms in disgust. “Dad, don’t pay attention to her. It’s just some ugly old burn from whatever cheap factory job she used to work.”

“Shut up, Madison!” Victor roared, his sudden explosion making Ethan flinch and forcing Madison to stumble back in shock.

Thirty-five years ago, a massive chemical plant disaster had nearly wiped out our entire township, leaving dozens injured and one young woman trapped under collapsing wreckage to save three trapped children.

That brave young woman was Ruth, and the company responsible for that illegal chemical dump—the company that paid millions in hush money to vanish from public record—was owned by a young, ruthless Victor Langford.
