My fingers trembled as I took the heavy envelope from Diane’s hand, the quiet chatter of arriving wedding guests echoing through the foyer. Ethan stepped forward, his face pale and desperate as he reached out to stop me, but my mother firmly blocked his path.

I tore open the paper to reveal a series of financial statements and legal documents stamped with a prominent law firm’s seal. Dated six months prior, the files showed that the estate Ethan claimed to own independently was actually held in a binding family trust controlled entirely by his mother and sister.

“Ethan didn’t just ask you to sign a standard prenuptial agreement, Olivia,” Diane revealed with a cold, triumphant posture. “He signed over his entire career equity to back Lauren’s failing business venture, using your joint savings as collateral without your knowledge.”

I stared at Ethan in absolute horror as the pieces of the puzzle slammed together in my mind. The sudden delays in purchasing our first house, his reluctance to merge our bank accounts, and his defensive attitude whenever money was mentioned were all calculated steps to hide his massive financial deception.

Lauren stepped forward, tears finally spilling down her cheeks as she held out her hands in apology. “My mother forced Ethan to cover my debts to save the family reputation,” she sobbed, “and today, she wanted me to walk down first to establish my legal stake in the family trust before you signed the marriage certificate.”
