PART 2: THE UNANNOUNCED VISITORS
Ten long years had passed since that devastating afternoon at the courthouse. Through endless night shifts and sheer determination, I had built a stable life for Ximena and myself, owning a cozy apartment and running a successful catering business.
On a rainy Tuesday evening, a sharp, frantic knock echoed through our hallway. I opened the door to find two figures drenched from head to toe, holding thick leather briefcases and trembling under the harsh corridor light.
It was Ofelia and Rodrigo. The arrogant mother-in-law who had spat on my dignity was now stooped, her eyes red-rimmed and hollow, while Rodrigo stood behind her with his shoulders slumped in total defeat.
In Ofelia’s trembling hands was a thick envelope overflowing with stacks of cash, alongside a velvet box containing antique family jewelry she had once hidden from me.
“Mariana, please,” Ofelia choked out, her voice stripped of every drop of the cruelty she had displayed a decade ago. “We have searched for you for three months. We will give you everything we own.”
Ximena stepped out from her study room, now a bright twelve-year-old girl, staring at the strangers with cold confusion as Rodrigo burst into uncontrollable tears at the sight of her.
