PART 2: THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

Grandpa’s hands shook so violently that the envelope slipped from his fingers, spilling several old photographs onto the wooden folding table.

I leaned forward in my wheelchair, my heart pounding in my ears as I caught a glimpse of the top picture.

It showed my grandfather in his late fifties, standing outside an old garage alongside a younger man who looked remarkably like the biker standing in front of us.

“You took everything from me twenty years ago,” the biker said, his rough voice dropping to a harsh whisper that made the hair on my arms stand up.

“You disappeared in the middle of the night and left a debt that took me two decades of my life to pay off.”

I looked at my grandfather, waiting for him to deny the accusations, but he simply closed his eyes as tears began to cut through the dust on his worn cheeks.

The crowded flea market around us faded into background noise as the dark secret of my grandfather’s past finally caught up to our quiet life.
