THE STEWED LIE

PART 4: A HOUSE OF PEACE

David fell to his knees beside my chair, weeping openly as the full weight of his foolishness and betrayal crushed his pride.

“Mom, please, don’t do this to us,” he begged, reaching out to touch my hand, but I pulled away with quiet, unshakeable dignity.

“I gave you life, David, and I gave you a home built on truth,” I said softly. “You chose to replace that love with greed and deceit. You need to leave now.”

Within the hour, police officers stood quietly by the front door as David and Jessica packed their suitcases under the watchful eyes of the entire family.

The front door clicked shut behind them, leaving the house in a deep, profound stillness that I hadn’t felt in over a year.

I sat down at the head of the table, cleaned the lingering spots from the tablecloth, and poured myself a warm cup of tea with a steady, peaceful hand.

My mind was clear, my home was secure, and for the first time in six long months, I breathed deeply, knowing I had defended my dignity and reclaimed my life.
