THE RECORDING IN THE RAIN

The tires screamed before I hit the pavement. One second, I was sitting in Derek’s car.

The next… I was on the cold, rain-soaked street. My hands were bleeding, and my dress was covered in dirt.

My unborn daughter was the only thing I could think about as I looked up just in time to see my husband’s car disappear into the storm.

The man who promised to protect me had just abandoned me. He took my phone, my wallet, and my access to our accounts.

He made sure nobody would believe me. Or so he thought. Because Derek made one mistake: he forgot that I had been listening.

Three days earlier, I was still living in our Lake Shore Drive penthouse—the place everyone believed was my dream life with a wealthy husband, a beautiful home, and a baby on the way.

But behind those glass walls, Derek had started taking control of everything. My laptop disappeared, my bank access changed, and my appointments were questioned.

Every decision became something he had to “approve.” And every time I resisted, he used the same calm voice that made his cruelty sound like love: “You don’t know what’s best for you right now.”

I wanted to believe he was worried, that pregnancy had simply made things complicated. Until I heard the conversation he never intended me to hear.

A conversation that made me secretly press record. A conversation about how he planned to prove I was unstable and take control of everything before our daughter was born.

He thought he had removed every obstacle. He thought leaving me on the street would erase me. He was wrong.

Because while Derek celebrated getting rid of his “problem wife,” I was about to walk into court with the one thing he couldn’t buy: proof.

Weeks later, the courtroom went silent as the judge looked over the documents. Then she said something that made Derek’s entire expression change.

“Mrs. Ashford… You are not the person who needs protection.” A long pause filled the room. “You are the legal heir to an estate worth millions.”

And for the first time… Derek realized the woman he abandoned in the rain was the same woman who could take everything from him.
