Dominic turned and froze, his glass stopping inches from his lips as his face drained of all color.
“Vivienne?” he stammered, his eyes darting nervously toward his mother and the boy standing proudly beside him.
Before he could offer a fabricated excuse, the massive screens lining the ballroom walls suddenly flickered and turned bright red.
Emergency notifications flared across every screen as live financial alerts announced the immediate liquidation of Sterling Capital’s credit line.
Gasps echoed through the ballroom as the board members stared at their phones in complete, unadulterated panic.
Dominic’s phone began ringing frantically, his CFO yelling through the receiver loudly enough for the nearest guests to hear.
“Dominic, our accounts are frozen! The Sterling trust just pulled all liquidity—we are bankrupt!”
