PART 2: THE REFUGE OF SILENCE
Rita’s swollen feet ached with every step she took around the kitchen, her pregnancy making even basic household chores an exhausting ordeal. Yet, instead of receiving a hand of support, she was greeted with relentless demands and cold contempt from Daniel’s relatives.
While Mam Daniel sat comfortably in the living room issuing orders, Vivionne and Youche spent their days criticizing every meal Rita prepared and every corner she cleaned. They treated the entire residence as if it were a hotel, leaving piles of dirty laundry and unwashed dishes in their wake.
Whenever Rita tried to speak to Daniel in private about the unbearable pressure, he would merely shake his head and ask her to endure a little longer. His cowardice tore deeper into Rita’s heart than any insult his family hurled at her daily.
The climax arrived on a rainy Tuesday evening when Vivionne intentionally knocked over a full bowl of hot soup onto the kitchen floor. She demanded that Rita drop to her knees and scrub the mess clean immediately, laughing mockingly at Rita’s visible distress.
When Rita looked to Daniel for protection, he merely looked down at his phone and whispered, “Just clean it up, Rita. Don’t make a scene in front of my family.” In that quiet moment of total abandonment, something inside Rita finally snapped.
