PART 3: THE VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH
When the university president called my name, the crowd erupted into applause, and Richard and Victoria leaned forward in the front row, smiling for the press.
I walked up to the podium, looking out over thousands of students, faculty, and guests, with national news anchors broadcasting live.
I slowly unzipped my graduation gown, slipped it off my shoulders, and draped it carefully over the podium, remaining in a simple shirt and trousers.
Gasps rippled through the audience, and the room grew dead silent as I unclipped the Valedictorian medal from around my neck.
“For twenty-two years, the man who paid for my education didn’t sit in a boardroom,” I announced, my voice echoing through the massive stadium.
“He wore a blue shirt with a name patch on the chest, worked twelve-hour night shifts, and scrubbed these very floors so I could stand on this stage.”
I pointed directly to Thomas, who stood near the side exit in his worn uniform, trying to blend into the shadows.
“My biological parents gave me up when I was sick, but this man gave me his entire life,” I continued, tears filling my eyes.
