The Reckoning at the Dining Table

The man standing behind me was Arthur Vance, a senior fraud investigator with the state insurance commissioner’s office—and my late father’s closest friend.

Lauren froze, her fork hovering in mid-air as Arthur pulled out a chair directly opposite her and sat down with a calm, deliberate smile.

My brother, Mark, looked between his pale, trembling wife and our unexpected guest in complete, bewildered silence.

“Arthur? What are you doing here?” Mark asked, looking around the table at the heavy atmosphere that had suddenly settled over the room.

“I’m here because your wife filed a fraudulent insurance claim on her SUV six months ago, Mark,” Arthur said smoothly, placing a manila folder on the table.

“She claimed the vehicle was parked and hit by an unknown driver to pocket a payout, while simultaneously taking $5,000 from your mother under the guise of paying for uninsured repairs.”

Lauren’s breath caught in her throat as Arthur opened the folder, revealing high-definition traffic camera footage and bank transfer records.

“You didn’t just exploit an elderly woman’s kindness, Lauren,” I added, leaning against the doorframe. “You committed insurance fraud.”
