The lead detective stepped forward, unfolding a thick legal folder packed with printed bank transfers and forged mortgage applications.
“Julian Miller, you are under arrest for domestic assault, identity theft, and grand larceny,” the officer announced clearly.
Eleanor gasped, stepping in front of her son defensively. “This is absurd! My son is an executive! Audrey made up those bruises to steal our family assets!”
“Actually, Mrs. Miller,” the detective countered sternly, “we also have federal search warrants for your residence regarding offshore accounts funded by forged checks bearing Audrey’s signature.”
Julian’s face drained of color as the officers stepped forward, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
My father walked over to me, wrapping a warm jacket around my shoulders as Julian was led out the door in front of the entire neighborhood.
Eleanor stood frozen, realizing that her grand plan to absorb my home had instead dismantled her own fragile social standing forever.
