Panic finally overtook Ethan as he lunged for the microphone, but my brother stepped in, firmly placing a hand on Ethan’s chest and forcing him back.

Dana began to cry, clutching her purse against her ribs in a desperate effort to hide the permanent proof of her betrayal.

“It was three years ago, Claire!” Dana sobbed, her voice breaking the heavy silence of the yard. “It was just one weekend in Chicago! I was lonely, and he was there!”

“You let her hold my son,” I whispered, turning off the microphone and looking down at the man I had loved for fifteen years. “You let her sit at our Thanksgiving table every single year.”

My father stepped forward, quietly taking my son inside the house while the remaining guests watched the complete collapse of a marriage built on lies.
