PART 2: THE SHADOW OF SILENCE
“I was diagnosed three weeks before you asked for the separation, Ethan,” Lila whispered, her voice barely carrying over the quiet hum of the hospital hallway.
The words felt like a physical blow, leaving me completely breathless as I stared at her pale, thin face.
She explained that doctors had discovered an aggressive stage-three illness during a routine checkup while our marriage was already crumbling under the weight of our shared grief.
She had stayed up for nights on end holding the official diagnostic papers, trying to find the courage to tell me while I was already drowning in work deadlines and distant anger.
When I brought up the idea of a divorce that painful April evening, she convinced herself that keeping the truth hidden was the ultimate act of love and mercy.
She genuinely believed that walking away in silence would spare me from watching her deteriorate, saving me from a second crushing wave of loss after our failed pregnancies.
“I didn’t want you to stay out of pity or duty, Ethan,” she said softly, a single tear cutting through the dust on her cheek. “You were already so broken, and I couldn’t bear to break you completely.”
My knees felt weak as the absolute horror of my own self-absorption crashed down on me with unbearable force.
I had assumed she was growing distant out of resentment, when in reality, she was quietly preparing to face the fight of her life entirely alone.
I gripped her cold fingers with both of my hands, swearing right then and there that I would never walk out of her life again, no matter how much she tried to push me away.
