I hit the freezing water. They laughed harder.
My mother-in-law raised her wine glass. My husband bowed like he had just finished a comedy show. Even the children were encouraged to clap.
They thought they had humiliated me. What they didn’t notice… was that I never asked anyone for a towel.
I climbed out, soaking wet, picked up my phone, and calmly sent a single message. “Do it now.” No explanation. No warning. No second chance.
Bradley smirked. “Finally giving up?” he mocked. I looked at him for a few seconds. Then I smiled. It wasn’t the smile of a defeated wife. It was the smile of someone who had just stopped protecting everyone in that backyard.
Less than fifteen minutes later… every phone at the party started ringing. His father’s face turned white. His mother’s wine glass slipped from her hand.
Bradley’s smile disappeared the instant he read the notification on his screen. He looked at me… then whispered only one word. “…How?”
