Audrey didn’t say a word; she simply laid the receipts flat across the wooden table, side by side in chronological order. Grant froze in his tracks, his eyes darting across the bank logos, dates, and account numbers exposed in plain daylight.
“You didn’t give a single cent of my money to your mother,” Audrey said, her voice eerily calm and steady. “You used her hostility to guilt me, while you gambled away my paychecks and drained our savings.”
Grant’s face turned pale as he stammered, trying to piece together a new excuse. “It was an investment account, Audrey! I was trying to win enough to buy us a house—I did it for us!”
Before he could step closer, the apartment door opened again, and Lenora burst inside without knocking, ready to berate Audrey for leaving the family group chat. She stopped short when she saw the financial documents scattered on the table.
“What is the meaning of this drama?” Lenora demanded, attempting to maintain her commanding presence. “Audrey, you are acting completely unhinged over a birthday dinner.”
Audrey pointed directly at the final paper—a legal notice from a debt collection agency addressed to Grant and Lenora jointly for an overdue property loan on Lenora’s apartment. “Your son didn’t just lie to me, Lenora,” Audrey stated firmly. “He’s been using my income to pay off your back taxes while telling me I owed you for raising him.”
