Audrey’s hands trembled as she pulled the bank slips and wire confirmation receipts out of the dusty leather binder. She had pulled it from the back of Grant’s closet while packing her remaining clothes into cardboard boxes.
The top document showed a monthly transfer of $300 going straight from Grant’s personal account into an online gambling domain. The dates lined up down to the exact afternoon she had handed him her hard-earned cash each month.
Every single payment Audrey had sacrificed to make—believing she was aiding her aging mother-in-law—was actually funding Grant’s secret addiction. Lenora’s demand for money had been a coordinated lie orchestrated between mother and son to keep Audrey’s salary flowing into his account.
A second receipt showed the $450 gold necklace transaction. However, the purchase date revealed it had been bought two weeks before Lenora’s birthday—using money Grant had withdrawn from their joint emergency savings without her knowledge.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway of their Willowmere Avenue apartment, followed by the sound of a key turning in the front lock. Grant walked through the door, carrying a bouquet of grocery store flowers and an apology written across his face.
“Audrey, please,” Grant began, holding his hands up defensively as he noticed the open binder on the dining table. “My mom was out of line at dinner, but you can’t just walk away over a misunderstanding.”
