PART 2: THE SHATTERED ILLUSION
Rick took a slow step backward into the hallway, his face completely drained of color as the officers stepped inside.
“Rick, what is he talking about?” I demanded, my voice trembling as I clutched the silver earrings tight in my fist.
The lead officer pulled out a sealed evidence bag containing a faded, yellowed notebook and a rusted brass key.
“These items were recovered late last night from a foreclosed storage unit registered under your husband’s secret secondary account,” the officer explained.
Rick opened his mouth to speak, but only a dry, choked gasp escaped his throat as he stared at the key.
“For ten years, Mrs. Rhodes, your husband hasn’t been grieving,” the officer continued softly. “He has been sending monthly payments to a private care facility three towns over.”
