PART 2: THE HEAVY BURDEN
Gerald handed me a small brass key before turning and stepping quietly out of the silent hospital room, leaving me completely alone with the heavy green canvas bag.
My hands trembled as I unzipped the main compartment, revealing stacks of legal documents, a leather-bound journal, and an old framed photograph of my late mother in her early twenties.
My heart slammed against my ribs as my gaze locked onto my mother’s bright, youthful smile, wondering how on earth a man I met three weeks ago possessed a picture of her.
I pulled out the leather journal and opened to the very first page, where Bennett’s sharp, elegant handwriting practically leapt off the paper.
“Dearest Camille,” the letter began. “If you are reading this, my heart has finally given out, and you are holding the sum of my life’s greatest regret and ultimate redemption.”
The words blurred before my eyes as I realized Bennett hadn’t chosen me at random from that waiting room—he had been searching for me for months.
