The dust settled back over the empty country road as I pulled out my second phone—a satellite mobile my late husband and I kept for private business.
I tapped a single contact, my personal attorney and lifelong friend who had managed our family assets for thirty years.
“Martha, it’s done,” I said calmly, my voice steady as I walked down the gravel shoulder. “They left me on Route 9.”
There was a heavy pause on the other end of the line, followed by a long, low sigh of deep disappointment.
“I hoped they wouldn’t go that far,” Martha replied softly. “Should I initiate the primary legal lockdown immediately?”
“Yes,” I said without a single second of hesitation. “Freeze every business account, revoke the corporate signing authority, and lock the estate gates.”
My kids believed that my husband was the sole owner of the trucking empire and the family property, viewing me as nothing more than a quiet housewife who folded laundry.
They never bothered to read the founding documents from forty years ago, which clearly named me as the primary shareholder and sole trustee upon his passing.
