Before David could touch the folder, I placed my hand firmly over it, staring him down with pure, unyielding confidence.
“Don’t bother,” I whispered. “The state prosecutor already has the original copies, along with every bank statement and forged signature.”
Eleanor let out a sharp gasp, her face twisting into sheer panic as she looked around at her silent, horrified relatives.
Right on cue, the heavy oak front door of my house swung open, echoing through the grand hallway into the dining area.
Four uniformed officers and two federal investigators stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the chandelier light.
“David Vance and Eleanor Vance,” the lead agent announced loudly. “You are both under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and tax evasion.”
