PART 3: THE UNEXPECTED LEGACY

The top document was a handwritten codicil to Mrs. Higgins’s last will and testament, dated late yesterday afternoon—just hours after I had finished mowing her lawn in the sweltering heat.

Her nephew had broken into her home in the middle of the night searching for her life savings, only to find the house empty and a note on her kitchen counter stating that everything had already been legally transferred to her pregnant neighbor.

In a fit of rage, the nephew had snatched her purse, brought it to my mailbox, and tried to frame me for extortion before fleeing the scene—unaware that my porch camera captured every single angle of his face.

“She called her estate lawyer the moment you walked back to your house yesterday,” the sheriff said, handing me a small, handwritten note tucked inside the legal papers. “She knew her time was coming, and she had no family left who cared about her.”

I unfolded the note with trembling fingers, recognizing the faint, shaky handwriting of the sweet old woman who had held my hand just hours before.
