Inside my rusted metal mailbox lay a blood-stained leather handbag and a thick, sealed Manila envelope stamped with Mrs. Higgins’s name. My heart hammered against my ribs so violently I thought I would faint on the front porch.
The sheriff pulled on a pair of latex gloves and carefully reached into the box, extracting the heavy envelope while keeping his eyes locked on my trembling frame. “Mrs. Higgins passed away peacefully in her sleep last night,” he revealed, his tone shifting from accusatory to deeply solemn. “Her doctor confirmed it was natural heart failure.”
“Then… why are you looking at me like I did something wrong?” I sobbed, clutching my pregnant belly as the tension overwhelmed my body. “Why is her bag in my mailbox?”
The sheriff pointed toward the security camera mounted on my porch overhang. “Her late-night visitor left it here at three in the morning,” he explained. “We watched your house footage before knocking. It was Mrs. Higgins’s estranged nephew—a man with a long criminal record who tried to break into her house last night.”
He tore open the envelope right there in front of me, revealing a thick stack of certified legal documents and cashier’s checks made out in my name.
