Tears streamed down my face as I read how Marissa spent her final months living quietly in a neighboring town, working with Mrs. Harper to oversee our lives from afar.

Every month when money seemed tight and an “anonymous grant” or “community aid” magically appeared to help with Noah’s therapy, it had been Marissa’s life insurance policy.

Mrs. Harper reached across the table and placed a small metal key into my shaking palm alongside a second envelope.

“She passed away peacefully eleven months after she left, Ethan,” Mrs. Harper whispered, her eyes filled with gentle sorrow.

“She watched you take Noah to the park from my window. She saw you carry him on your shoulders when he learned to walk.”

“She loved both of you until her very last breath, and she left a trust fund that unlocks today to secure Noah’s future completely.”

Noah reached over and wrapped his arms around me as my shoulders shook with deep, cathartic sobs for the years of misplaced resentment.
