The ink on the yellowed page was slightly smudged, as if Marissa’s tears had fallen on the paper as she wrote eighteen years ago.
“My dearest Ethan,” the letter began. “If you are reading this, it means Noah is an adult, and Mrs. Harper has kept her word to me.”
My chest tightened as I read the words, every line shattering the bitter image of the cold woman I thought had abandoned us.
