“Why come back now?” I demanded, tears blurring my vision as I stared at the man who had been stolen from my youth. “Why marry my daughter?”
Mark took a heavy step back, wiping a runaway tear from his cheek before looking toward the brightly lit ballroom.
“I didn’t seek Emily out,” he confessed softly. “We met at a charity event in Chicago six months ago completely by accident.”
He explained that when she mentioned her mother’s maiden name, his heart had nearly stopped in his chest.
“I tried to walk away, but then she showed me an old family photograph—and I saw the date on the back,” Mark revealed.
He opened the letter further, pointing to a final, desperate paragraph written in my mother’s distinct hand right before she passed away.
The letter confessed that Emily was not my biological daughter from my late husband, but rather the child born from our final night together before we were torn apart.
My mother had kept the secret to her grave, arranging an informal adoption process to protect the family image while raising Emily as my own.
