My fingers trembled as I reached out to take the yellowed paper from Mark’s hand.
I recognized my mother’s delicate cursive immediately, the precise ink strokes sending a wave of phantom memories rushing over me.
Twenty-two years ago, my mother had told me that Mark had packed his bags, abandoned our town, and left without leaving even a simple goodbye note.
Heartbroken and feeling completely discarded, I had eventually moved on, met my late husband, and built a modest, quiet life.
“Your mother intercepted every single letter I wrote to you,” Mark whispered, his voice cracking with decades of buried grief.
“She paid me off to leave, telling me that if I stayed, she would destroy your college tuition fund and ruin your future before it even started.”
I gasped, pressing a hand to my chest as the foundations of my past began to crack and shatter beneath my feet.
