PART 2: THE AUDIT BEGINS
Austin pulled up a chair and sat down, crossing his legs as if he owned the entire hospital room.
“You have until six o’clock to get out of that bed, come home, and apologize to my mother,” he demanded, pointing a finger at my face.
Brenda scoffed behind him, adjusting her pearl necklace with an air of absolute superiority.
“A proper wife knows her place,” Brenda added coldly. “You should be honored that my son even allows you to share his lifestyle.”
I looked at both of them, feeling absolutely no fear, only a deep, icy sense of detachment.
“My answer is still no, Austin,” I said smoothly, resting my hands in my lap. “You should probably check your work phone.”
His brow furrowed in annoyance as his phone suddenly began buzzing violently in his jacket pocket.
He pulled it out, expecting a routine update, but his face drained of color as he read the high-priority notification from corporate headquarters.
“Emergency forensic audit?” he muttered, his voice trembling slightly as he stared at the screen.
