PART 3: THE MIRROR OF GUILT

Every excuse I had ever rehearsed in my mind disintegrated into ash. I sat before my wife, stripped of my ego, realizing the unbearable weight of the pain I had inflicted.

I reached out to grab her hand, but she pulled back gently, shaking her head. The distance between us across that simple wooden table felt like an unbridgeable canyon.

“You thought you were being clever, James,” she whispered, a single tear finally escaping her eye. “But you were just absent. You abandoned us long before you ever touched another woman.”

I buried my face in my hands, sobbing openly as the full reality of my selfishness crashed over me. I had destroyed the one person who had truly loved me, all for cheap, meaningless thrills.

She stood up from the table, placing a neatly organized envelope right in front of me—the divorce petitions, fully prepared and awaiting my signature.

“I’m taking the kids to my mother’s house for the weekend,” she said quietly. “Use this time to pack your things.”
