PART 2: THE RECKONING

Lauren didn’t flinch, nor did her eyes drop from mine. There was no terror in her expression, only a heavy, crushing tiredness that made me feel smaller than I ever had in my life.

“I’ve known about the hotels, James,” she said, her voice steady and devoid of anger. “I’ve known about the late-night texts, the perfume, and the ‘business trips’ to Houston and Chicago for three years.”

The room spun. My throat closed up as the arrogance I had carried for years instantly evaporated, leaving behind a cold, suffocating dread.

“I stayed because of the children,” she continued softly, placing her hands flat on the table. “I stayed because I hoped you would eventually wake up and remember that you had a family that loved you.”

She explained that Andrew wasn’t a lover, but a divorce attorney she had consulted to prepare the legal separation papers months ago.

He had held her hand at the café because she had broken down in tears while finally signing the documents that would dissolve our nine-year marriage.
