“Three years ago,” I said, stepping between my daughters and the man who had abandoned us, “I was trapped in a flipped sedan on Route 9 with fractured ribs and severe internal bleeding.”
“I called you three times while the smoke filled the cabin,” I continued, my voice echoing off the sterile walls. “You answered on the third ring, only to tell me you were busy driving Brooke to an emergency vet clinic for her dog.”
Nathan flinched as if struck, his hands trembling as he tried to find words that simply didn’t exist to defend the unthinkable.
“You told me to call an Uber, Nathan,” I whispered, watching Brooke’s face turn from outrage to absolute horror as the realization hit her. “You hung up on your pregnant fiancée to play savior for another woman’s pet.”
Brooke slowly unclasped her hands from Nathan’s coat, staring at him as if seeing a complete stranger for the very first time.
“Is that true, Nathan?” Brooke asked, her voice cracking with pure disgust. “Did you leave her bleeding in a ditch?”
Nathan couldn’t look her in the eye, his silent, shameful nod confirming every detail of the nightmare I had endured alone.
