Sitting comfortably on our sofa was a woman holding one of our newborn twin daughters, gently rocking her back and forth.
It was his mother—the very woman he had claimed was critically ill in another state, using her alleged hospital stay as an excuse to pocket thousands from our savings.
My husband stood frozen in the entryway, his face drained of all color as his eyes darted between his mother and me.
“You told me Mom was in the ICU,” I said, my voice steady and cold as I held our second daughter close to my chest. “You said she needed emergency medical funds last month.”
His mother looked up at him with a mixture of heartbreak and fierce disappointment, holding up a stack of bank statements I had pulled while he was away.
