PART 6: The Storm Cellar
Before I could move toward the window, my youngest held up my smartphone, her face completely pale as she dropped it into a glass of water. They begged me to understand, weeping quietly as they insisted that keeping our family safe required absolute, unending loyalty. Realizing I couldn’t reason with their twisted logic, I shoved past them into the hallway and sprinted down the stairs into the heavy afternoon rain.
I ran wildly toward the thick woods behind our property, my shoes slipping through the thick mud as the rusty iron doors of the storm cellar came into view. Heavy chains wrapped around the handles, secured by a thick padlocked latch that glinted in the dim light. Grabbing a sharp stone from the ground, I smashed the rusted lock with all my remaining strength until the iron finally snapped free.
Hauling the heavy doors open, the dark interior revealed four shivering, exhausted figures trapped in the deep damp earth below.
