PART 3: The Hidden Inheritance
I pulled out the manila folder, revealing official legal deeds, asset ledgers, and offshore account statements detailing a fortune worth tens of millions of dollars.
“Victor spent thirty years watching me, waiting for me to break or remarry someone he could intimidate,” the lawyer said, sitting down across from me. “Gloria played the eccentric, penniless old woman at the nursing home so no one would look twice at her.”
“Why me?” I gasped, staring at the numbers on the page. “She barely knew me two years ago.”
“She watched how you treated people who had nothing to give you in return,” the lawyer explained softly. “You brought her extra blankets on freezing nights, stayed past your shift just to listen to her stories, and never once asked about her past. In a world full of vultures, you were the only person who treated her like a human being.”
“The bag,” I realized, touching the leather. “She carried it everywhere…”
“Because the original trust documents were inside,” the lawyer nodded. “If Victor’s team had found them before a legal marriage was recorded, they would have tied the estate up in litigation forever.”
How did Victor react to the news? Continue reading Part 4 below for the confrontation.
