“You idiot,” I whispered, tears spilling over as I grabbed her cold hand, refusing to let go this time. “You thought erasing yourself from my life was protecting me? Five years, Sophie. In sickness and in health. That wasn’t just a phrase we said at an altar.”

“Ethan, the divorce is final—”

“I don’t care about a piece of paper,” I interrupted, standing up and pulling the chair right next to her. “I walked away once because I was a coward who couldn’t handle silence. I am not walking away again.”

I picked up my phone right there in the hallway and called my lawyer, instructing him to reverse every asset division and initiate the process to legally reunite our finances so my health insurance and savings could cover her treatment immediately.

Sophie buried her face in her hands, the heavy wall of isolation she had built finally crumbling as she allowed herself to cry.
