“When the doctors gave me the diagnosis three months ago,” Sophie continued, a single tear cutting through the pale exhaustion of her cheek, “they told me the treatment would be grueling, expensive, and uncertain. I knew our savings were already drained.”
“You thought I would leave because of money?” I asked, my voice cracking with overwhelming shame.
“No,” she said softly, finally looking into my eyes. “I knew you wouldn’t leave. I knew you would stay out of obligation, spend every penny we had saved for our future house, and watch me deteriorate day by day. You were already drowning in grief from what we lost, Ethan. I couldn’t let my illness destroy the rest of your life.”
