Mark’s breathing grew shallow as he unfolded the yellowed document, his fingers shaking so violently the paper rattled in the night air.

“Your mother paid off my family’s debts on one condition,” Mark admitted, looking up at me with profound sorrow. “I had to promise never to contact you again, and I had to leave state for at least five years.”

“Then why are you here now, Mark?” I demanded, tears finally bursting past my eyelids. “Why marry my daughter? Is this some twisted revenge against my mother?”

“No!” Mark choked out, stepping closer. “I didn’t seek Emily out. But when we met through a mutual client six months ago, I saw your eyes in hers. I fell for her because she carries the exact same light you had when we were young.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box I had seen once before, decades ago. “I kept this ring for twenty-three years, waiting to tell you that I never stopped loving the memory of us.”
