Part 3: Shadows in the Boardroom
Stepping into the high-powered corporate world of Suncrest Holdings was like entering a gilded war zone where millions of dollars changed hands with the single click of a button.
My private office on the penthouse floor was breathtaking, equipped with custom luxury interior design, polished marble desks, and floor-to-ceiling panoramic views overlooking the city’s most exclusive residential quarters.
For the first two weeks, Connor maintained an impeccable boundary of professional distance during official business hours.
We reviewed commercial mortgage defaults, audited multi-million-dollar real estate acquisitions, and managed private equity trusts that funded luxury resort properties across the coast.
Yet beneath his stoic corporate persona, I caught the subtle, lingering glances whenever I presented quarterly financial reports, the way he personally ensured my favorite iced coffee was delivered to my desk every morning, and the subtle protection he offered whenever arrogant board members tried to undermine my authority.
However, the elite corporate world was not without its venomous predators.
Enter Victoria Sterling—a prominent high-society heiress, senior corporate litigation attorney, and the daughter of Suncrest’s largest private equity investor, Arthur Sterling.
Victoria was a woman accustomed to getting whatever she desired, driving a custom white European sports car, wearing high-ticket diamond jewelry, and making it blatantly clear to the entire firm that she intended to marry Connor to unite their family fortunes.
She viewed my sudden appointment as Connor’s personal strategic analyst not just as a professional threat, but as a direct insult to her social standing.
One evening, after the rest of the executive staff had departed, I stayed late in the central vault room, cross-referencing an itemized forensic accounting ledger for an upcoming forty-million-dollar waterfront villa development project.
The heavy glass door opened, and the sharp, clicking sound of designer heels echoed against the marble floor.
Victoria stood in the entryway, her arms crossed over her tailored silk blazer, her eyes cold, dismissive, and filled with condescending arrogance.
“Working late, Miss Lin?” Victoria mocked, strolling over to my desk and looking down at my files with disgust.
“I must admit, Connor’s sudden charity case is quite amusing. A girl from a modest suburban background trying to navigate high-yield commercial loans and offshore banking channels.”
“I suggest you double-check your security clearance, Miss Sterling,” I responded calmly, without looking up from my dual-monitor display. “These documents contain confidential corporate tax filings and private banking trust ledgers reserved strictly for executive directors.”
Victoria let out a sharp, cruel laugh, leaning over my desk until she was just inches away.
“Let me give you a reality check, Maya,” she sneered, her voice dropping to a harsh, razor-sharp whisper.
“Connor doesn’t belong to your nostalgic little childhood world anymore. He is a high-net-worth CEO whose company relies on my father’s sixty-million-dollar commercial credit lines.”
“A marriage between Connor and me is already being negotiated by our family estate attorneys to secure full voting control over the Sterling-Vance Real Estate Trust.”
“You are just a temporary distraction—a cute little memory from his impoverished past.”
“If you don’t resign by Friday, my father’s legal team will initiate a corporate audit into your background, freeze your professional credentials, and ensure you never work in financial management again.”
My chest tightened as a cold wave of anxiety washed over me, but before I could utter a single word of defense, a low, commanding voice echoed from the doorway, cold enough to freeze the air in the room.
“Is that so, Victoria?”
Connor walked into the room, his hands tucked casually into his Trouser pockets, but his eyes burning with a dark, lethal fury that made even Victoria flinch.
