PART 2: The Red Box

PART 5: The Final Resolution

On the final night of the cruise, as the ship sailed back across the open waters, I sat at the stern holding the blue ceramic tin lid.

I filled the leather journal with entries describing every city, every sunset, and every person I had met along the way, writing to Frank just as if he were sitting in the chair next to me.

When I finally returned home, I placed the journal and the brass compass on our mantelpiece right beside his photograph.

The grief didn’t disappear, but the cold emptiness was gone. Frank had given me thirty-two years of devotion, and with his final act of love, he gave me the courage to keep living, exploring, and holding onto joy for the rest of my days.
