PART 4: The Decision at the Crossroad

“Twelve years,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “You let me build a life with a ghost.”

“I did it to keep you safe!” she pleaded, reaching across the table to grab my hand. “If I told you, if anyone ever linked Maya to Elena, you would have become a target for the people who hunted my family. Every day I spent with you was the only real, safe life I ever had.”

Arthur leaned forward, placing a plane ticket on the table beside the brass key. “The server holds the evidence that can finally clear your family’s name and dismantle the cartel that hunted you. But you have to reclaim it yourself, Elena. Before they realize the key has surfaced.”

I looked at the plane ticket, then at the tear-stained face of the woman who had loved me, raised our children, and supported me through twelve years of life.

I picked up the brass key and slid it into my pocket.

“We’re not letting you go alone,” I said firmly. “We’re a family, Elena. Whatever was left in that past, we finish it together.”
