PART 2: The Pocket Watch and the Key

PART 3: The Secret Sanctuary

We sat in the back of a quiet coffee shop three towns over. My wife’s hand shook so violently that the tea in her cup sloshed over the rim, while I sat in stunned silence across from the woman I thought I had known for over a decade.

“The tattoo isn’t a symbol, Mark,” she whispered, pulling down her sleeve to show me the tiny black mark. Under the harsh cafe light, I could see that what I thought was an abstract shape was actually a set of micro-engraved latitude and longitude coordinates surrounding a family crest.

“My real name is Elena Vance,” she confessed, looking into my eyes. “My family ran a private international witness protection syndicate for whistleblowers exposing state-level corruption. Twenty years ago, our network was compromised from the inside.”

To protect her life, her mother had burned her identity, branded her with the coordinates to the network’s master encrypted server, and sent her into hiding with instructions never to speak her real name again.

“The old man, Arthur, was my mother’s chief archivist,” she explained. “The key he gave me opens the physical vault hidden beneath our family’s former estate in Austria.”

How did Mark react to her secret life? Continue reading Part 4 below for the showdown.
