PART 4: The Final Hand-Off
A sudden pair of bright headlights swept down the quiet street, illuminating the alleyway.
Victor immediately stepped in front of me, his posture shifting into that of a highly trained operative.
“Your mother knew her time was running out,” Victor said, pulling a leather folder from the black SUV and placing it in my hands. “She begged me not to tell you the truth until the statute of limitations expired on the estate trust—which happened at midnight last night.”
“What happens now?” I asked, looking at the black SUV and then back at the empty, cleared-out shelter where I had spent my childhood watching a man I thought was a burden.
“Now, you are no longer the poor girl with tape on her shoes,” Victor said, a proud smile finally touching his lips. “You are the sole heir to your father’s estate, and the evidence in that folder will finally put the men who ruined your family behind bars.”
He opened the passenger door of the SUV for me.
“My contract with your mother ended the moment she took her last breath,” Victor said softly, taking my hands in his one last time. “But my promise to your father stands forever. I’m taking you to a safe house, Maya. It’s time to claim the life your mother fought so hard to save for you.”
I looked back one last time at the small, run-down rental house, finally understanding the profound, invisible love that had protected me every single day of my life.
I stepped into the car, ready to finish the fight my mother had started.
