PART 3: The Guardian in the Shadows

The cold wind swept through the narrow alley, but I felt like I was burning from the inside out.

“So… she chose to live in poverty?” I choked out, tears stinging my eyes as memories of taped sneakers and eviction notices flooded my mind. “She let us starve… to keep us invisible?”

“She sacrificed every luxury she ever deserved to keep you off the radar,” Victor said softly, his eyes reflecting deep respect. “She hired me using the last of her personal savings to stand guard over this house.”

“For twenty years, Victor?” I sobbed. “You lived in a makeshift shack behind our house for twenty years just to watch us?”

“I gave your father my word before he died that I would protect his daughter,” Victor said gently. “Playing the part of an unhoused, forgotten man was the only way I could stay within twenty feet of your back door without raising suspicion from the neighbors or private investigators.”

He reached into his expensive coat and pulled out a heavy set of keys.

“Every meal she brought out to me wasn’t charity, Maya,” Victor whispered. “It was our daily check-in. She was passing me status reports, checking on security threats, and making sure the evidence remained safe.”

“Then why did she beg you to stay silent before she died?” I asked, my voice breaking.

“Because the men who killed your father were still looking,” Victor replied, his face darkening. “And three weeks ago, they finally traced your mother’s medical records to this city.”
