The heavy iron gates of the Mercer family estate swung open, welcoming a steady procession of imported European luxury vehicles, German sedans, and high-end SUVs onto the winding cobblestone driveway.
The three-hectare lakefront property in the premier suburban district was bathed in the crisp afternoon light, decorated with hundreds of pink and white balloons, silk banners, and elaborate floral arrangements.
Guests dressed in high-fashion designer attire—including corporate litigation attorneys, commercial real estate developers, and local high-society figures—milled about the manicured lawn, sipping vintage champagne from crystal flutes.
Camille stood under the shade of a soaring white silk pavilion, glowing in a custom ivory lace gown that accentuated her pregnant stomach.
Beside her, Daniel looked polished and immaculate in a dark navy tailored blazer, holding a glass of sparkling water while conversing with several senior partners from his wealth management group.
They looked like the ultimate picture of high-net-worth perfection, a wealthy couple celebrating their upcoming heir surrounded by family, business partners, and influence.
When my black Mercedes AMG pulled up to the VIP valet station, the atmosphere shifted almost instantly.
Conversations lulled as I stepped out onto the pristine driveway, wearing a sleek, floor-length emerald green silk dress paired with a tailored blazer and sharp high heels.
I didn’t look like a broken, grieving ex-wife coming to shed tears over her past mistakes; I looked like an executive CEO arriving to close a multi-million-dollar corporate acquisition.
Camille’s face faltered for a fraction of a second, her smile freezing as her eyes registered my presence, but she quickly recovered, clutching Daniel’s arm tighter as if displaying her prize.
“Naomi! You actually came!” Camille announced loudly, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she stepped out from under the pavilion to greet me.
“I was so worried you’d find it too difficult… given everything you went through during your marriage with Daniel.”
Daniel looked down at me with a mixture of cold condescension and mild discomfort, adjusting his luxury watch.
“Glad you could make it, Naomi,” Daniel said, his voice laced with unearned arrogance. “It takes a big person to put the past behind them and celebrate our family’s blessing.”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world, Daniel,” I replied smoothly, my voice calm, elegant, and carrying perfectly across the gathering crowd. “After all, family legacies are built on absolute truth.”
Camille pointed toward a massive gift table draped in pink velvet near the center stage, where dozens of boxes wrapped in expensive paper and designer ribbons were stacked high.
“You can place your gift over there with the others,” Camille said with a faint, mocking smirk. “We’re opening them on stage right after the catering service finishes.”
“Oh, my gift isn’t going on the table, Camille,” I said softly, holding a thick, elegant silver gift box tied with a satin ribbon in my hands.
“This requires a personal presentation… in front of everyone.”
Daniel frowned slightly, a tiny flicker of unease darting through his eyes, but he quickly dismissed it, motioning toward his brother, Alistair, who was standing quietly near the outdoor bar.
Alistair was thirty-two, darker, quieter, and carrying the sharp, restless energy of a man who had lived in Daniel’s shadow his entire life while managing the family’s construction and logistics divisions.
When Alistair’s eyes locked onto mine, he shifted uncomfortably, taking a long drink from his glass as if trying to wash down an unseen panic.
“Well, the more the merrier!” Camille laughed, turning back toward her high-society friends. “Make sure you grab a glass of champagne, Naomi. You look like you could use a celebration!”
I smiled, taking a seat at a VIP table near the front of the pavilion, right beside my senior legal counsel, Evelyn Vance, who had arrived ten minutes earlier disguised as my personal guest.
“Everything is lined up,” Evelyn whispered, tapping her tablet under the linen tablecloth to confirm our digital filings with the county court clerk.
“The moment you give the signal, the emergency asset freeze on the marital home and Mercer Holdings’ joint accounts goes live.”
“Let them enjoy the cake first,” I whispered back, leaning smoothly against my chair. “A fairytale burns much brighter when the lights are on.”
